What the data shows

Four things twenty years of recording say. Every figure is per trap-night: the lamp ran a different number of nights each year, so a per-night figure lets any two years be compared fairly.

Fewer moths than there were

2002: 55.4 (17)2003: 68.7 (26)2004: 86.8 (31)2005: 103.0 (24)2006: 75.4 (27)2007: 51.9 (29)2008: 43.0 (27)2009: 36.2 (27)2010: 60.6 (33)2011: 41.8 (28)2012: 27.8 (30)2013: 39.2 (22)2014: 56.3 (26)2015: 27.1 (25)2016: 24.5 (19)2017: 22.8 (30)2018: 42.7 (29)

Across 2002–2018, the garden went from 65 moths a night to 38, a fall of 41%. It is the most important thing this record says.

The garden peaks in week 32, the start of August, at 144 moths a night. By Christmas, almost nothing.

Dark nights bring the most

🌑 55.1 (76)🌒 35.4 (73)🌓 44.1 (77)🌔 34.8 (81)🌕 29.8 (79)🌖 45.3 (82)🌗 45.7 (79)🌘 43.9 (70)

1.9 times as many moths come to the lamp under a new moon as under a full one: 55 a night against 30. The lamp ran a similar number of nights under every phase, so effort does not explain it.
